If you’ve celebrated your fortieth birthday, you probably suspect that your metabolism isn’t quite what it used to be. The bad news is you’re right: calorie burn does decrease with age. But there’s also good news: you’re probably burning more than you think. New research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals just how many calories, on average, men and women in their forties, fifties and sixties burn each day. Drum roll… please! According to the study, men aged 40 to 69 expend about 2,900 calories. Women of the same age burn 2,300 calories daily. (These averages vary based on a person’s height, weight and activity). well, since i won't be 40 for another 4 years and 3 months..i will wait to answer...just kidding. I have definitely noticed a difference since I turned 30; however, I think being a graduate student did more to change my eating habits than turning 30. I am finding that the closer I get to finishing grad school the closer my body is getting back to my "pre-grad school" body. Back on topic...back in my twenties I used to drink "weight gainer" shakes to put on pounds and now if I even look at hagan-daaz ice cream I feel like i gain a pound...
Wow! Why didn't someone pull us aside in our twenties and tell us, "You're not gonna have it so easy in your 30s, 40s, etc. Oh, and by the way, take advantage of your cute little kitty-kat looks and tight bod now while you still can cuz honey, they don't last long!" : ) I love how the story says people in their 40s burn roughly 2300-2900 calories a day. If that's true, we must have burn't about 5000 calories a day back in our twenties cuz for me, I never worked out, I ate junk food morining, noon, and night and drank like a lush and I never gained an ounce. Now, I'm running 20-25 miles per week and don't drink or eat much junk food and I can barely maintain my current weight! My body is hanging on to these last 5 pounds I want to lose and refuses to let them go no matter what. What's up with that? :)
