We've all been there: "just 1 more mile to go" or "5 more minutes on the elliptical machine," or "1 more set of 10." Is there a song(s) that gives you that extra boost that you need to finsih what you've started and complete your workout? Here's a few (in no particular order) that help me out when I need it most:
1. Best of You - Foo Fighters
2. The Bodypopper- Deekline & Wizard
3. Keep On Risin' - Jay-J f/Latrice
4. Last Resort - Papa Roach
5. 'Til I Collapse - Eminem & Nate Dogg
6. Gotta Get Thru This - Daniel Bedingfield
7. Reach - Clubworld
8. Headstrong - Trapt
9. Looking Good/Feeling Gorgeous - RuPaul
10. Revolution - Kirk Franklin

Question of the Day: What's your favorite "Power Song" (e.g., one that helps you continue/finish your workout)?

It is absolutely fabulous that you created this blog. I need to get into better shape physically, mentally, and spiritually... This is definitely inspiring... Thank you!!
Come on...let's get physical, physical...we gotta get physical...
Glad you like it, Lisa! When are we gonna run that 5k race together we've been talking about? : )
OK, the song that will invariably get me moving better & faster is "Hollaback Girl."
I've been running Lake Merritt near our house once a week...it's about 3.4 miles around, and I'm up to running almost 2 miles of it (~20 min) nonstop (if I stop, I can't really get going again, and I'm not so good at pacing myself yet). The goal is to run the whole thing by January...since we're traveling for 10+ days between now & then it may not happen by New Year's, but the end of the month will make me happy.
Good luck, Kathy! If you have an iPod Nano, you should buy the Nike+ iPod Sports Kit. It's only $29 and it's the best motivation you could ask for. All it is is a little transponder (?) that attaches to your shoe and a tiny device that plugs into your Nano. While you're running and listening to your jams, a voice will come on to tell you how far you've run, what your pace is, and even how many calories you've burned. Click on my "Nike+ iPod Sports Kit" link on my main page under "favorite sites."
Thanks for posting!
I usually run with my shuffle (well, Leona's--I can't find mine) since my big one crapped out. I think I'm getting a 160 GB iPod classic for Christmas...I'll see if the Nike thing works with it. It would be good to have treadmill stats without the treadmill (my gait gets too short & I get chin splints on the tread)...
Thanks for this blog--it's nice to have an outlet for this stuff!
you're welcome. Re: the Nike+ kit, it only works with the Nano, unfortunately. : ( I bet you could get a used "first-generation" nano on Amazon or Ebay for less than $50 now that they're up to generation 3. Might save some wear and tear on your expensive 160G iPod. Just a thought...
i stand corrected. looks like a 1st or 2nd generation nano will run you about $80 or so on Amazon:

but they're much less on Ebay..
music is so important to my workout that when i first started going to the gym, if i got there and found i forgot my ipod or the battery was dead, i would turn around and go back home! now that i'm more experienced, i have all sorts of back up systems in place to make sure that never happens :-).
i pick my workout tunes by deciding what mood i'm in -- which means i reload my shuffle every day. a lot of times we may decide we're not "in the mood" to work out. one day i realized that my MOOD had nothing to do with whether or not i could still move my fat ASS! :-) how about that -- you can move even if you're in a funk. who knew?
so now, i assess my mood, and pick mixes that will make me even more cranky, happy, sad, etc -- whatever i need to hear at the moment. truth is, no matter what mood i start out in, by the time i'm done, i feel GREAT!
Ok, I have to ask: 1. What song makes you cranky? 2. What song makes you happy? and 3. What song makes you sad? For me, it's 1 (angry) "Fight the Power" - Public Enemy, 2 (happy) "Calabria" - Enur, and 3 (sad) "This Woman's Work" - Maxwell.
hey --
oh boy -- keeping in mind that i have 4000+ songs in my itunes library, the list of songs for my various moods can be in the hundreds!
well, my cranky playlist is called "fuckallayall" :-). sample tunes: black on black- dalbello, only happy when it rains- garbage, dies irae- verdi's requiem, mirror in the bathroom- english beat, salt water fish- ruby, bitter moon- candyland.
the happy playlist -- that's called "foolproof" because no matter what mood i'm in, if i want to get happy, i can listen to any song on it and it will do the trick. a few you might know are: ai no corrida- quincy jones, copacabana- barry manilow (i know!), do your thing- basement jaxx, hyperactive- thomas dolby, the one thing- inxs.
but my usual playlist when i am borderline is "don't sass me" which has 142 songs on it: and i am telling you (dance mix)- jennifer hudson (thanks kev!), call the law- outkast, defying gravity- wicked, don't rain on my parade- barbra streisand, not a virgin - poe, o.g. bitch - esthero.
sad, a.k.a. "deeeeepressing": because i told you so- jonatha brooke, every word- sade, goodbye- lizz wright, i've seen it all- bjork, wooden horse- suzanne vega, two star- everything but the girl, invisible war- julia fordham.
don't get me started -- i could do this all day!
OMG, pdw! I am in awe of your wonderfully diverse musical palate! I thought my tastes were well represented across the spectrum, but they ain't nuthin' compared to yours, honey! Don'tcha just love how music has the power to touch us in ways that mere alone words cannot? What is it about a certain song that can bring us to tears, give us goosebumps, make us dance with joy, or motivate us to do things we may not have done otherwise? Whatever it is, I am thankful for the experience...
