The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that people in shape burn 300 to 400 calories per day from physical activity and/or exercise. (A beginning exerciser is advised to aim for 150 calories per day or more, and work up.) To achieve this calorie burn, or energy expenditure, people should accumulate 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity throughout the day. Check out this quick read by clicking HERE.
QuoD: How long do YOU usually spend working out? Do you do cardio AND weights when you work out at the gym (or at home)?

I usually do cardio and weights on separate days, otherwise I'd be at the gym for 2.5 hours or more. I run for an hour at a time and workout at the gym for about 90 minutes on average. After doing weights, I'm so spent that I couldn't possibly do any cardio. Conversely, if I did cardio first, I don't think I could make it through my entire workout routine afterwords.
i was spending two hours on weight-training alone a while back, but i deliberately shortened it to 30-40 minutes of cardio, followed by 45 minutes of weights. i realized that by the second hour, my intensity was flagging, and all i really wanted to do was go home! so now, my weight routine is shorter -- i only work two body parts per session instead of three -- but i work those body parts much harder.
If I'm pressed for time, I can be in & out in 30 minutes (usually cardio with some stretching). If I'm not pressed for time, I can find myself there for 1.5-2 hours.
My average, though, is about 45 minutes...could be all cardio with some stretching or a combo of weights & cardio.
Always with the stretching....
I'm guilty of not stretching a lot of the time. I read somewhere recently that stretching may not be all that it's cracked up to be and that it may, in fact, do more harm than good in some cases. I'll try to find that article and post it...
