Crunching numbers at the gym: Should you worry about target heart rate, the 'fat-burning zone'?

Is it OK to exercise beyond your target heart rate? Should you work out in the "fat-burning zone" to lose more weight? Here's some great advice from MSN's health & fitness experts: click HERE.

For me it depends on where I am: if I'm at the gym on some cardio machine I rarely push myself to the limits; but, if I'm running, sometimes I try to go for it every once in a while just cuz it feels great to run as fast as I can. Makes me feel like a kid again! : )

I'm so glad you posted this! It's been a long discussion in our house, and now we actually have some information...

I can push myself more on a machine at the gym than I can out in the world (some sort of girl over machine ego thing, I think)...and I try to do 2 good, hard workouts/week. I don't really trust the heart monitor on the elliptical, though, because the calorie counter is way off...

Hey Kath,
Glad to hear you found it useful. I always thought that there was something wrong with the traditional way of calculating max hr. Although their recommended new way to do it is a little complicated, it should yield a much more accurate result. btw, I LOVE your comment about "girl vs. machine" and how that motivates you to push yourself! For me, I get a little competitive at the gym when someone is next to me on the same piece of equipment (esp. if they're younger!) : )
